How to Cope with Feeling Powerless

There are moments in life when we all feel like the rug has been pulled out from under us. Circumstances shift. People surprise us. The plans we made unravel faster than a roll of cheap toilet paper. Or maybe you live in a country where your leader is turning your democratic country into an oligarchy. In these moments, we feel powerless—and let’s be honest, it's not our favorite look.
But here's the twist: even when you feel powerless, you’re not actually powerless. You might not control the chaos, but you can shape your response to it—and that's where your power lives.
1. Count Your Blessings (Even If They're Small or Weird)
Gratitude isn't just a trendy buzzword. It rewires your brain. So start small. Be grateful for hot showers, supportive friends, your dog’s happy tail, or the fact that the Wi-Fi came back on just when you were about to lose it. The more you notice what's working, the less you feel like everything’s falling apart.
2. Mindfulness: The Art of Watching Your Inner Drama Without Popcorn
Instead of trying to control the story, practice observing it. Mindfulness helps you sit with uncomfortable feelings without letting them drive the car. Breathe. Sip tea. Watch the thoughts come and go like clouds—or if you're feeling dramatic, like a bad soap opera. No judgment. Just presence.
3. Faith in the Bigger Picture
When the ground feels shaky, spirituality reminds us there’s more going on than what meets the eye. Whether it’s God, the Universe, your ancestors, or simply a wise inner voice, trust that there's a current pulling you forward even if you can't see where it's going. Surrender isn’t giving up; it’s handing the wheel to something wiser than your anxiety.
4. Affirm What’s Supporting You
Say it out loud. Write it down. Post it on your bathroom mirror:“I am supported.”“I am stronger than this moment.”“I trust that life is shifting in my favor.”Affirmations don’t deny reality—they reshape your perspective so you can handle it with more grace (and a lot less panic).
5. Do One Small Thing (Then Give Yourself a Cookie)
Overwhelm loves to paralyze us. So instead of trying to fix everything, just pick one thing: fold the laundry. Go outside. Email that person. Check something off the list and feel the power of progress. Then, yes—treat yourself. You’ve earned it.

You Are Not Alone in This
Powerlessness is a temporary costume; your true nature is capable, intuitive, and connected. Whether you’re calling your power back through rituals, prayer, journaling, or just a really good cry followed by a foot massage—you’re doing beautifully.
Take time to unwind.Shine brighter and feel lighter. And if you need support, I’m here. Always.
